A few things about THE TREES THEY GROW SO HIGH...
As I mentionned in the album page, the CD cover that I have used here is from the rerelease of the album in 1995. The original cover featured only a large picture of Miss Sarah, the same one that can be seen in the upper right portion of the above image.
Another cover (minus any pictures of Miss Sarah) was chosen in 1998 for another rerelease of this album in Europe, where it is also known as EARLY ONE MORNING. You can see all three covers by clicking on the "alternate album covers" link on the right menu column.
The songs on this album are taken from Benjamin Britten's six published volumes of traditional folks music. They contain 43 songs and were published between 1943 and 1961.
The first volume includes, amongst others, the songs ASH GROVE and OLIVER CROMWELL. The second volume features many French songs, of which five have been recorded for this album. The remaining songs are from volume 3 and 4, with one song taken from volume 5, EARLY ONE MORNING. As volume 6 is for both voice and guitar, none of those songs appear on the album.
Benjamin Britten published two further volumes of 4 English folk songs and 8 songs for voice and harp, in 1968 and 1976, the year of his death.
He has used several of these songs in his films scores for British films and documentaries in the 1930ies and 1940ies...
I thought it might be interesting to list all 8 volumes of Britten's work, for those of you with an interest in folk music... Most of these songs have been recorded by other artists over the years. Amongst others, Charlotte Church has done THE LAST ROSE OF SUMMER for her 1999 album titled CHARLOTTE CHURCH...
