Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem
The premiere performance of this work by Andrew Lloyd Webber was recorded on February 24th, 1985 at the St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in New York City. The Requiem Mass starred Placido Domingo, Sarah Brightman and Paul Miles-Kingston. Lorin Maazel conducts the choirs of Winchester Cathedral and St. Thomas' Church, and the orchestra of St. Luke's.
The original album of REQUIEM won the 1985 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Composition and it reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts in the US.
The song list includes Requiem & Kyrie. Dies Irae, Offertorium, Hosanna, Pie Jesu and Lux Aeterna & Libera Me.
The song REQUIEM has a very personal meaning for me although I don't talk about it much. You can then imagine how I felt when Miss Sarah sang it on the LA LUNA concert. I started to cry and could not stop. It is such a beautiful song and it was such a surprise to hear her sing it, so long after it was recorded, that even I as I write this, I can still feel the emotions of that cold October night at the Corel Center come back to me...
The video of the song by Miss Sarah and Paul Miles-Kingston shows once again the pain of war and the devastation it leaves behind in the name of whatever cause people give to justify their cowardly acts.
And in this day and age, it speaks for the beautiful work of Andrew Lloyd Webber when the song remains so timely...
Thank you Mr. Webber, thank you Miss Sarah and thank you Mr. Miles-Kingston.
