Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Royal Albert Hall Celebration

A 2-hour tribute to Andrew Lloyd Webber in honor of his 50th birthday. The concert was recorded in 1998 at The Royal Albert Hall and it features more than a dozen stars who perform more than 24 songs from the composer's best known musicals. It was directed by David Mallet.

One hit song follows another and they are often done by the very people who have made them famous. For those of us who have not had the chance to see the original Broadway or London versions of the shows, it is a rare chance to hear these songs as they were originaly done.

Miss Sarah does several PHANTOM songs, including one with Antonio Banderas who, back then, was a serious contended for the role of The Phantom is a proposed motion picture based on the play. He had just done EVITA with Madonna and the odds were high that he would become The Phantom. Alas, that has come to pass.

It is a very entertaining program and the penguins, I must say, were quite taken with Glenn Close as Norma Desmond from SUNSET BOULEVARD and they would have loved to be there instead of those kids when Donny Osmond sang ANY DREAM WILL DO.

I am not sure M. Webber would have enjoyed a crowd of penguins cooing and swaying to the music. They also asked me why there was no cake wheeled on stage if it was his birthday. They can be sooooooo nosy...

Anyoooooo...
