The album DIVE...
The very first mainstream album for Sarah Brightman, it was released in 1993 by A&M Records.
And it is one of our favorites... After EDEN, it is right up there...
I can still remember turning on the television set that one friday evening after work and seeing this very strange video playing on MUCH MUSIC, with a familiar voice singing... Yes, it was Miss Sarah singing "CAPTAIN NEMO"...
And you should have seen the penguins... They were just getting their little tv trays set up before their THUNDERBIRDS show came on but when they glanced at the television, they just froze, dropped their STOUFFER's fettucine and started swooning...
They were never the same after that day...
Of course after the video was over, they did try to push me on a bus to go to HMV to get the CD right away... I said, hum, no. Wikkeddy did try calling 9-1-1 but the very patient lady on the line said that no, not having a Miss Sarah CD was not a reason to send an ambulance to the mall, sirens blazing, for them to pick one up
Well I did stop at the record store the following day, only to be told that the album was not available in Canada yet... Well !!! I couldn't wait for it to come out and when it did, guess who rushed off work and made it to MUSIC WORLD not 5 minutes before closing time ???
And guess who's the silly individual who forgot to recharge the portable CD player's batteries the night before ???
And had to pay through the nose at a convenience store for a set of DURACELL ???
And who almost got trampled by them greedy flipper fiends who wanted the CD when he got home ???
It is a bit sad though that on her recent tours, Miss Sarah has not sung more selections from this album, although a highlight of the EDEN one was the inclusion of CAPTAIN NEMO/LA MER, complete with a flying act to suggest an underwater world... As Miss Sarah says on the DVD of EDEN, she insisted that a way be found to render that illusion possible and it worked perfectly... And I agree with her, the blend of those 2 songs became a highlight of the show... It never fails to bring a lump to my throat and of course, it's KLEENEX time for the penguins after that...
I cannot name a favorite on this album, because the way it is done, all the songs flow so smoothly into one another that I rarely program the CD player for anything in particular... It's worth listening to from beginning to end...
BUT !!! If I had to choose favorites, well, CAPTAIN NEMO is one, SHIP OF FOOLS is another, along with ONCE IN A LIFETIME and ISLAND... And the penguins just want to go frolic in the pool and sing LA MER...
So sit back, close your eyes, and enjoy this wonderful album...
As always, just click on the red arrow beside a song title for its lyrics...
